Overview of the Dashiki
The word “dashiki” originated from dàńṣíkí, a Yoruba word and from the Hausa dan ciki, which means a ‘shirt’ or ‘inner garment’. The original style of the dashiki is a top garment that covers the upper half of the body. Dashiki is also known as a Kitenge in East Africa.
This fabric is quite common in Tanzania and Kenya and is worn both formally and informally. The styles may be a traditional wrapper draped around and below the shoulders, a loose-fitting pullover top or a garment with embroidered neck and sleeve lines.
